Checking a Rental Scooter's STNK & Plates in Bali
By the SiapPergi Editorial Team · Published 11 October 2026 · 6 min read

At a police checkpoint, officers don't ask whether your scooter is rented. They check your licence and the scooter's STNK (vehicle registration certificate). If the STNK is only a photocopy, the tax hasn't been paid, or the number doesn't match the plate, you as the rider get the ticket, not the rental owner. Checking takes three minutes at handover. This article shows which parts of the STNK to look at, how to read the number plate, how to check a Bali scooter's tax online, and what to carry when you ride.
Why is a rental scooter's STNK your problem?
Indonesia's traffic law (Law No. 22 of 2009) requires every rider to carry a valid STNK and the right licence. On the road, police deal with whoever is riding the scooter. The rental may agree to cover the fine later, but you've already lost time at the checkpoint and sorting it out isn't always easy. So check the documents before you set off, not after you've been stopped.
This check complements the physical inspection of the scooter (brakes, tyres, lights) covered in checking your rental scooter at handover. Here we focus only on the paperwork.
5 parts of the STNK to check
- Original or photocopy. An original STNK is printed on special paper with a hologram and stamp. Photocopies, photos on a phone or laminated copies are not accepted as a valid STNK at checkpoints.
- Registration number. It must exactly match the plates on the front and back of the scooter, including the letters after the numbers.
- Make, type, colour and year. A black Vario must not have the STNK of a red Scoopy. A mismatch like this is a sign the scooter has problems.
- STNK validity (5-yearly). The date is printed on the STNK. If it has passed, the STNK must be renewed at Samsat and the plates replaced.
- Proof of annual tax. Every year the owner pays the tax and the STNK is endorsed. The receipt (tax sheet/SKPD) is usually folded together with the STNK. Look at the next due date and make sure it hasn't passed.
Photograph the front and back of the STNK with your phone at handover, then put the original back where it belongs (usually in the under-seat storage). The photo doesn't replace the original, but it's useful if the STNK gets lost or an electronic ticket needs to be matched.
How to read a Bali number plate
Bali number plates start with the regional code DK, for example DK 1234 AB. At the bottom of the plate is a small number in month.year format, for example 08.28, meaning the plate is valid until August 2028. A plate past that date means the 5-yearly STNK hasn't been renewed.
Since 2022, new plates have a white background with black characters, but black plates with white characters that are still within their validity remain legal until they are due for replacement. So the plate colour isn't an issue; what matters is the date and that it matches the STNK.
| What to check | Normal | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Regional code | DK (Bali) | Out-of-Bali plates with no explanation, especially with no STNK |
| Date on the plate | Not yet passed, e.g. 08.28 | Month/year already passed |
| Plate number vs STNK | Exact match | Even one letter or digit different is a problem |
| Plate condition | Fitted front & back, readable | Only one plate, broken, bent, or covered with stickers |
| Annual tax | Paid, next due date still ahead | Due date already passed |
Plates from outside Bali aren't automatically illegal. But for a rental scooter, DK plates are more practical: the tax is paid in Bali, it's easy to check, and the Bali provincial government is tightening rules on commercial vehicles with out-of-province plates. If you're offered a scooter with non-Bali plates, ask why and make sure the original STNK and tax are in order.
Match the frame and engine numbers
This step is often skipped, yet it's the most effective way to weed out problem scooters. The frame and engine numbers are printed on the STNK. On the scooter, the frame number is stamped into the frame (on automatic scooters usually under the seat or near the floorboard), and the engine number is on the engine block. You don't need to check every digit; match the last 5 digits of the frame number. If it's hard to reach, ask the rental staff to show you. An honest rental won't mind.
Check a DK-plated scooter's tax online
You can confirm the tax status of a Bali-plated scooter yourself, using just the registration number and the last 5 digits of the frame number:
- Samsat Bali information service (the official Samsat/Bapenda Bali Province website or the Bank BPD Bali portal). Enter the registration and frame numbers as instructed.
- The SIGNAL app (Samsat Digital Nasional) from the Indonesian National Police traffic corps (Korlantas Polri), which is connected to Samsat Bali.
The result shows the tax due date. If it has passed, ask for another scooter. Only use official websites and apps; never enter details on links sent by strangers.
Documents police ask for at checkpoints
| Document | Who provides it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Original, valid STNK | Rental | Keep it in the under-seat storage throughout the rental |
| SIM C (Indonesian citizens) | You | Carry the physical card, or the official digital SIM if the officer accepts it |
| Home licence + IDP with motorcycle category (foreigners) | You | The IDP must include category A (motorcycles) |
| ID (KTP/passport) | You | A passport photocopy is usually enough for daily riding; keep the original somewhere safe |
| SNI-certified helmet, fastened | Rental & you | Rider and passenger; the strap must be buckled |
Penalties for common checkpoint offences, such as riding without a licence or a helmet, are covered in Bali traffic rules & police checks. For everything on licences and IDPs, see requirements for renting a scooter in Bali.
If the STNK is lost or has problems mid-rental
- Don't ride the scooter if the STNK is lost. Contact the rental; they need to report the loss, as the STNK is in the owner's name.
- If you're fined for expired tax, keep the ticket and send it to the rental. Tax is the owner's responsibility, so it's fair to ask for the fine to be refunded or the scooter to be swapped.
- If a plate falls off or breaks, take a photo and tell the rental. Riding without a plate can get you fined.
3-minute checklist
- The original STNK is with the scooter and its registration number matches the plate.
- The annual tax date hasn't passed; the date on the plate hasn't passed.
- The make, type and colour on the STNK match the scooter.
- The last 5 digits of the frame number match.
- Photos of the STNK and plate are saved on your phone.
Ask when you book: 'Does the original STNK come with it, and is the tax up to date?' A well-run rental answers straight away. It's one of the signs covered in finding a trustworthy scooter rental in Bali.
Conclusion
An original STNK, paid-up tax, and plates that match and haven't expired: these three things decide whether a police check takes one minute or ends with a fine. When you book a scooter rental in Bali through SiapPergi, ask about the paperwork before the scooter is delivered, then check it yourself with the list above. Staying in an area with frequent police checks? Book a Canggu scooter rental or Kuta scooter rental and ask for a photo of the STNK first.

Frequently asked questions
Can I carry a photocopy of the rental scooter's STNK?
It's not enough. At checkpoints only a valid original STNK is accepted. A photocopy or a photo on your phone is only useful as a backup if the STNK is lost.
Who pays the fine if the rental scooter's tax has expired?
The rider who receives the ticket on the spot, but the tax is the owner's responsibility. Keep the ticket and ask the rental to refund the fine or swap the scooter.
How do I check the tax on a DK-plated scooter?
Use the official Samsat Bali information service or the SIGNAL app with the registration number and the last 5 digits of the frame number. The result shows the tax due date.
What do the small numbers at the bottom of the number plate mean?
That's the validity of the plate and the 5-yearly STNK in month.year format. For example, 08.28 means valid until August 2028.
Is a rental scooter with non-Bali plates illegal?
Not automatically, as long as the original STNK and tax are valid. But DK plates are easier to check and more practical for renting in Bali.
