Tanjung Benoa is known for banana boats, parasailing and jet skis, but it also has quieter beachfront hotels at friendlier prices than the resorts inside the Nusa Dua complex. The downside is its position at the tip of the peninsula, which makes taxis anywhere feel expensive. With a rented scooter, you are free to visit the beaches of the Bukit, have dinner in Jimbaran, or ride to the airport on the toll road over the sea.

Getting to know Tanjung Benoa

Tanjung Benoa lies in South Kuta district, Badung, and juts north from Nusa Dua. Its western side faces the relatively calm waters of Benoa Bay, which is why watersport centres line its shore. Almost all hotels, restaurants and watersport operators are on Jl. Pratama or in the small lanes branching off it.

At the northern tip of the peninsula is an old village where a Hindu temple, a Chinese temple and a mosque stand side by side, a picture of religious harmony few visitors see. Glass-bottom boats also leave from the beach here for the turtle sanctuary on Serangan Island.

Which scooter to choose

Tanjung Benoa itself is flat. You only notice the climbs when you head south to Pandawa, Melasti and Uluwatu. For two people with bags, the Honda Vario is a good middle ground: economical yet powerful enough.

The scooter lane on the Bali Mandara Toll Road

The Bali Mandara Toll Road is an elevated road over the sea, about 12.7 km long, linking Nusa Dua and Benoa, Ngurah Rai Airport and Benoa Harbour. It has a dedicated motorcycle lane separate from the car lanes. The scooter toll is around Rp5,000 per trip (rates may be adjusted) and is paid cashless with an electronic money card such as e-Money, Flazz, Brizzi or TapCash.

  • Make sure your card has credit before reaching the gate. Cash is not accepted.
  • Stay in the marked scooter lane and do not enter the car lanes.
  • Crosswinds over the sea can be strong. Hold the handlebars firmly and do not stop on the shoulder for photos.
  • The toll road is the fastest route to the airport and towards Sanur, avoiding the congested Dewa Ruci roundabout.

Ask the rental whether the scooter comes with an e-toll card. If not, buy an electronic money card at a minimarket and top it up. One card can be used for both the outbound and return trips.

A sample one-day route

  1. 8:00–11:00: watersports in Tanjung Benoa while the sea is calm and it is not yet too hot.
  2. 11:30–14:00: Pandawa Beach for a swim and lunch. The road to the beach runs through cut limestone cliffs.
  3. 15:00–16:30: Melasti Beach or GWK, depending on your interests.
  4. 17:00–19:00: Uluwatu Temple and the Kecak dance at sunset.
  5. 19:30: seafood dinner in Jimbaran, then ride home via Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai towards Nusa Dua.

This route is about 60–70 km round trip with some climbs on the Bukit, so a 125 cc or bigger scooter is more comfortable. Riding home at night means busy main roads. Turn on your lights, do not overtake tour buses on bends, and read our Bali scooter safety tips. For the beaches down south, see the Uluwatu beaches scooter route.

Parking while you do watersports

  • Large watersport operators have their own car parks. Park there, not on the narrow shoulder of Jl. Pratama.
  • Keep your wallet, phone and keys in the operator's locker or locked under the scooter seat. Do not leave them on the sand.
  • A wet helmet left on the mirror is easily lost or swapped. Store it under the seat or ask staff to look after it.
  • Many touts offer packages by the roadside. Compare prices from several operators before deciding.
  • Before paying, confirm whether the agreed price is per person or per package, and that it includes life jackets and the activity's duration.
  • After your activity, rinse off and dry before riding. A wet seat and slippery hands make your grip on the handlebars less secure.

If you stay inside the Nusa Dua complex

Some resorts in the ITDC Nusa Dua area restrict guest scooter parking or ask that scooters be parked in a specific area. Hotels in Tanjung Benoa are generally more relaxed. Ask reception before booking delivery, then have the rental bring the scooter to the lobby. Information on the surrounding area is in our Nusa Dua scooter rental guide.
