Holidaying with colleagues, a club or a big family makes scooter rental the most fun: everyone moves freely and the cost per person is low. But renting five to twenty scooters at once isn't the same as renting one. There's unit availability, deposits, who's responsible, and how to ride as a group without getting separated or endangering others. This article covers group scooter rental in Bali from booking to the last day.

How many scooters does a group need?

Count the people who can and are willing to ride, not the number of participants. One scooter carries at most two people (the rider and one passenger). Example: a group of 10 with 6 licensed riders needs at least 5 scooters if riding in pairs, plus an alternative for those who don't want to ride.

Group sizeScooters needed (riding two-up)Extra advice
4 people2 scootersChoose a Vario/NMAX if there are lots of hills
6–8 people3–4 scootersOne spare bike if someone wants to ride solo
10–12 people5–6 scootersConsider a car for older people, children and luggage
15–20 people8–10 scootersSplit into two convoy groups on the same schedule

Groups with small children or older people are best off combining scooters with a car with driver. Advice on carrying children is in riding a scooter with kids in Bali.

Choosing models for a group

ModelEstimated market price/dayBest for
Honda BeAT±Rp60–80kBudget groups in South Bali, lighter riders
Honda Scoopy±Rp70–90kBeginners and smaller riders, short distances
Honda Vario 125±Rp75–100kMixed town riding and gentle hills, two-up
Yamaha NMAX±Rp120–150kLong routes: Kintamani, Bedugul, East Bali
Honda PCX±Rp130–160kComfortable two-up riding over long distances

Try to give everyone in one group bikes of similar power. A convoy mixing BeATs and NMAXs ends up with uneven speeds on hills. A detailed comparison is in the best scooters for touring Bali.

How to book a group scooter rental

  1. Gather the details: number of bikes per model, dates and times, accommodation address, and riders' names.
  2. One coordinator contacts the rental, so there are no double bookings or conflicting information.
  3. Ask for the total price in writing: price per unit per day, delivery and pick-up fees, helmets (two per bike if riding two-up), raincoats, and the deposit.
  4. Ask whether all units come from one rental. If the rental pools units from several owners, make sure each bike's STNK is original and valid.
  5. Agree on a joint handover at one place and time, so all the condition checks can be done together.

Via the Bali scooter rental page, you can send your group's requirements in a single WhatsApp message. Availability, the final price and the deposit are confirmed before you pay.

Deposits and responsibility in a group

Rentals usually ask for a deposit per bike, or one combined deposit in the coordinator's name. The second is more practical but risky: damage by one person could cut into everyone's deposit. Agree on internal rules from the start.

  • Record who rides which bike (number plate + rider's name).
  • A handover video for each bike, filmed by its rider.
  • Internal rule: damage and traffic fines are paid by the rider of that bike.
  • One WhatsApp group with all riders and the rental's number, so everyone knows if there's a problem.

Details on deposits, scratches and losses are in deposits, insurance & damage on Bali scooter rentals.

Legal rules that apply to every rider

  • A SIM C for every rider; riding without a licence carries a maximum fine of Rp1 million or up to 4 months' detention (Law 22/2009 Article 281).
  • SNI helmets for riders and passengers (Article 106(8); penalty under Article 291).
  • No more than one passenger per bike (Article 106(9)).
  • Headlight on during the day (Article 107(2)).

Other offences and common police checks are listed in Bali traffic rules & police checks.

Safe convoy tips for Bali's roads

  1. A 5-minute briefing before setting off: destination, rest stops, and what to do if you get separated.
  2. A leader at the front who knows the route, and a sweeper at the back who is the most experienced. The sweeper never overtakes.
  3. Ride in single file, not two or three abreast filling the lane. Keep about a 2-second gap between bikes.
  4. Never run a red light just to keep up. The leader pulls over and waits after the junction.
  5. Keep groups small: with more than 6–8 bikes, split into two groups a few minutes apart so you don't hold up traffic.
  6. Share a Google Maps meeting point in the group chat before leaving, so anyone left behind can still catch up. Navigation tips are in Google Maps navigation on a scooter in Bali.
  7. Avoid times and roads closed for traditional ceremonies; give way to ceremonial processions.

An overly long convoy breeds traffic violations: riders at the back are tempted to speed and jump lights to keep up. Two small groups meeting at the destination are safer than one long line.

Routes that suit groups

For groups with mixed abilities, start with short routes in South Bali such as Kuta–Seminyak–Canggu, or Uluwatu and the Bukit beaches. More experienced groups can follow the 3-day Bali itinerary by scooter. Avoid steep, winding roads on the first day until every rider is used to their bike.

Group coordinator checklist

  • List of riders + a photo of each licence.
  • Number of bikes per model and number of helmets.
  • Total price, deposit, delivery fee and late-return rules in writing.
  • A WhatsApp group with the rental's number.
  • Daily schedule, meeting points, and a backup plan for rain.
  • A joint return time on the last day.

Frequently asked questions

How much does group scooter rental cost in Bali?

It follows market prices per model, for example a BeAT at around Rp60–80k and a Vario at around Rp75–100k per day. For many units over several days, the price per unit can often be lower. Ask for the total price in writing.

How far ahead should we book scooters for a group?

For 5 or more bikes, book at least 1–2 weeks ahead, and earlier during the July–August holidays and at year-end.

Does everyone in the group need a licence?

Everyone who rides must hold a SIM C or a foreign licence with a valid IDP. Passengers don't need a licence but must wear a helmet.

How do deposits work when renting many scooters?

Either per bike or combined in the coordinator's name. Record who rides which bike and agree that damage is paid by that bike's rider.

Can a scooter convoy ride side by side on Bali's roads?

It's better to ride in single file and leave room for other vehicles. Split large groups into smaller ones so you don't hold up traffic.
