Scooter Rental for Interns in Bali: Save Over 3–6 Months
By the siappergi.com team · Published · 7 min read · Baca dalam Bahasa Indonesia

Every year thousands of tourism, hospitality and culinary students come to Bali for internships, PKL (vocational work placements) or trainee programmes at hotels, restaurants and beach clubs. The first problem is almost always the same: how do you get to and from work every day without burning through your allowance? For most interns, the answer is a monthly scooter rental. This guide helps you work out the costs, pick a scooter and avoid problems during 3–6 months in Bali.
Why rent a scooter instead of using ride-hailing every day?
Intern boarding houses (kos) are usually in cheaper areas — Kampial, Tanjung Benoa, Jimbaran, Kerobokan or Denpasar — while the hotels are in Nusa Dua, Uluwatu, Seminyak or Canggu. A 5–15 km commute each way by ride-hailing motorbike can cost Rp40–80k a day, or over Rp1 million a month. With a monthly rental, transport usually costs less and you can leave at any hour, including for dawn shifts.
| Option | Estimated cost per month | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ride-hailing motorbike both ways | ±Rp1–2 million | Depends on distance and peak-hour fares; hard on night shifts |
| Monthly scooter rental (small automatic) | ±Rp700k–1.5 million + petrol | Most flexible; also good for trips on days off |
| Monthly rental shared by two | ±Rp350–750k per person + petrol | Works if you share a kos and have similar shifts |
All the figures above are market estimates. The exact rental price always comes from the rental; the latest estimated prices per model are in the table below and on the scooter rental in Bali page.

Which scooter suits an intern?
- Honda BeAT or Scoopy — the most fuel-efficient and cheapest to rent monthly. Enough for the flat roads of Nusa Dua–Jimbaran–Kuta. See BeAT rental and Scoopy rental.
- Honda Vario 125/160 — more power for the climbs on the Bukit (Uluwatu, Pecatu, Ungasan) and if you often ride with a passenger. See Vario rental in Bali.
- NMAX/PCX — comfortable, but nearly twice the price. Usually unnecessary for an internship.

How to get the best price for 3–6 months
- Book before you arrive. Start looking 2–3 weeks before your internship starts, especially if it falls in July–August or December.
- Ask for a monthly price for the full term. Renting for 3 or 6 months in one go often gets a discount compared with renewing month by month.
- Ask what's included: regular servicing/oil changes, two helmets, a raincoat, and a replacement scooter if it breaks down.
- Compare the total cost, not the daily price. Include the delivery fee to your kos.
- Pay monthly, not everything upfront, unless the rental has already proven trustworthy. Bargaining tips are in how to negotiate scooter rental prices in Bali.
Requirements and documents
You must have a valid SIM C. Rentals usually ask for your KTP (Indonesian ID card), sometimes with your student card as well, an active WhatsApp number, your kos address, and sometimes an internship letter or the hotel HR contact as extra security. Never hand over your diploma or other important documents as collateral. Full requirements are in requirements to rent a scooter in Bali.
Commute routes to watch out for
- Simpang Siur–Bypass Ngurah Rai and the Dewa Ruci statue junction are jammed at commuting times. Leave 20–30 minutes earlier.
- The roads to Uluwatu and Pecatu are steep and dark in places. Make sure your brakes and lights are in top shape.
- The Bali Mandara Toll Road has a dedicated motorbike lane for Nusa Dua–Benoa–Airport; see riding a scooter on the Bali Mandara Toll Road.
- Other traffic hotspots are in Bali traffic hotspots & rush hours.
Hotel night shifts often finish at 11 pm or after midnight. Save the rental's number, keep a raincoat under the seat, and read tips for riding at night in Bali before your first week.
Saving on fuel and maintenance
A 110–125cc automatic generally does ±45–55 km per litre. With a 20 km daily commute, you'll need about 10–12 litres of petrol a month. Fill up at a petrol station, not from roadside bottles. For rentals longer than a month, remind the rental about oil-change intervals — good rentals usually cover it.
If the scooter breaks down or goes missing
Report it to the rental via WhatsApp with photos, and don't take it to a workshop yourself without permission unless it's an emergency. Accidents and compensation claims are explained in Jasa Raharja & BPJS after a scooter accident in Bali, and lost keys or STNK are covered in lost rental scooter keys or STNK.
Conclusion
For a 3–6 month internship, a monthly rental of a small automatic is the cheapest and most flexible option. Book early, ask for a full-term price, make sure servicing and a replacement scooter are included, and pay monthly. Frequently asked questions
How much does a monthly scooter rental cost for an intern in Bali?
The estimated market price for a small automatic like a BeAT or Scoopy is about Rp700k–1.5 million per month, depending on the area, the scooter's age and the season. Renting for 3–6 months in one go often gets a better price.
Is renting a scooter cheaper than ride-hailing for an internship in Bali?
For a daily 5–15 km commute each way, a monthly rental is usually cheaper and more flexible, especially for morning and night shifts.
Can I rent a scooter without a licence for my internship?
It's not recommended. A SIM C is legally required, and without one you risk a fine and serious trouble if there's an accident.
Which scooter is best for an intern in Nusa Dua or Uluwatu?
A BeAT or Scoopy is enough for flat roads; for the Uluwatu hills and frequent riding with a passenger, a Vario 125/160 is more comfortable.
What should I ask when renting a scooter for 3 months?
The monthly price for the full term, whether servicing/oil changes are included, how many helmets, a replacement if it breaks down, the deposit, and monthly payment terms.
