Scooter Rental for Gianyar: Art Villages, Waterfalls & Beaches
By the siappergi.com team · Published · 5 min read · Baca dalam Bahasa Indonesia

Many people think Gianyar and Ubud are the same thing. In fact Ubud is just one district of the regency. Around it are silver and woodcarving villages, art markets, temples and cliff-cut shrines hundreds of years old, waterfalls in river valleys, and black-sand beaches few tourists visit. All of these are spread along village roads that public transport barely reaches. With a scooter, you can combine several of them in one day.
Gianyar beyond central Ubud
This article covers Gianyar as a wide region. If you only plan to ride around the Monkey Forest, Jl. Raya Ubud and Tegallalang, read our dedicated guide to scooter rental in Ubud. Here the focus is on places where a scooter is really useful: the art villages along the Batubulan–Mas road, the Tampaksiring area, waterfalls in the river valleys, and Gianyar's southern coast.
Where to rent a scooter
- Ubud: the widest choice in Gianyar, and many rentals can deliver to your homestay. See scooter rental in Ubud.
- Sanur: ideal if you stay on the coast. Jl. Prof. Ida Bagus Mantra takes you to Ketewel, Keramas and Gianyar town without going through Denpasar's traffic. See scooter rental in Sanur.
- Villas in Keramas, Ketewel or Saba: ask for delivery from Sanur or Ubud, with a delivery fee based on distance.
Three main scooter routes in Gianyar
| Route | Passes through | Road character |
|---|---|---|
| Jl. Prof. Ida Bagus Mantra (coast) | Ketewel, Keramas, Saba, Lebih | Wide and fast, but busy with trucks and buses. Strong crosswinds in places |
| Art village route | Batubulan, Celuk, Sukawati, Mas, Ubud | Two-way, lined with shops and tour buses during the day |
| Northern route | Ubud, Pejeng, Tampaksiring, towards Kintamani | Steady climb, cooler air, many bends |
Gianyar sights by theme
Art villages and shopping
- Batubulan: the centre of stone carving. Barong dance shows for visitors are usually held in the morning.
- Celuk: rows of silver and gold workshops and shops.
- Sukawati: Sukawati Art Market for fabrics, crafts and souvenirs. Bargain politely and come early for more space.
- Mas: the woodcarving village. Many galleries let you watch carvers at work.
Large purchases are hard to carry on a scooter. For statues or carvings, ask whether the shop offers shipping.
Temples and ancient sites
- Goa Gajah in Bedulu: a meditation cave with a carved face around its entrance, about 15 minutes from central Ubud.
- Pura Tirta Empul in Tampaksiring: a holy spring temple where people perform the melukat purification ritual.
- Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring: shrines carved into the river cliff. Reaching them means going down hundreds of steps, so save energy for the climb back up.
All temples require modest clothing plus a sarong (kamen) and sash. You can usually borrow one at the entrance. Store your helmet under the seat or lock it to the scooter.
Waterfalls
Tegenungan in Kemenuh is the easiest waterfall to reach, about 25 minutes from Ubud. Kanto Lampo in Beng is smaller and tiered, great for photos. Access to the waterfalls is usually by steep steps that get slippery in the rain, so wear shoes with good grip. A full route covering several waterfalls in one day is in the Gianyar waterfalls scooter route.
Black-sand beaches and food
Keramas Beach is known for its world-class surf, while Saba and Lebih beaches are quieter places to watch the sunrise. Lebih Beach is lined with grilled fish and satay warungs. The currents along this coast are strong and the water gets deep quickly, so do not swim. In the evening, try babi guling (suckling pig) or snacks at the Gianyar town night market.
A sample day trip from Sanur
- 6:00 Watch the sunrise at Saba or Keramas Beach (about 30 minutes from Sanur).
- 8:00 Breakfast, then ride up to Batubulan and Celuk on village roads.
- 10:00 Sukawati Art Market, then the woodcarving galleries in Mas.
- 12:30 Lunch around Ubud, then Goa Gajah.
- 14:30 Pura Tirta Empul in Tampaksiring (about 30 minutes from Goa Gajah).
- 17:00 Ride back to Sanur on village roads heading south (about 1–1.25 hours). Avoid the coastal road after dark if you do not know it well.
Riding tips for Gianyar
- Watch for large vehicles on the coastal road. Trucks and buses travel fast on Jl. Prof. Ida Bagus Mantra. Keep left and do not stop suddenly on the shoulder.
- Busy hours on the art village route. Tour buses stop outside shops and galleries around 9 am–12 pm. Take extra care when overtaking.
- Village temple ceremonies. Gianyar is very active with ceremonies. Roads may be closed temporarily and diverted by the pecalang (village guards). Read temple ceremonies and road closures.
- Parking. Attractions charge a small parking fee. Keep the ticket until you leave.
- Head home before dark. Many roads between villages are unlit, and afternoon rain is common from Ubud northwards.
Combine Tampaksiring with Kintamani in one trip. From Tirta Empul, the road keeps climbing to Penelokan in about 45 minutes. The full route is in the Ubud–Kintamani scooter route.

Frequently asked questions
Is Ubud part of Gianyar?
Yes. Ubud is one of the districts of Gianyar Regency. Gianyar also includes Sukawati, Blahbatuh, Tampaksiring, Tegallalang, Payangan and the Keramas–Saba coast.
Is it better to rent in Ubud or Sanur to explore Gianyar?
If most of your destinations are in the north (Tampaksiring, Tegallalang, waterfalls), rent in Ubud. If you stay on the coast or want to visit Keramas and Saba beaches, Sanur is more practical.
How long does it take from Sanur to Tampaksiring by scooter?
About 1 hour on village roads heading north, depending on traffic through Sukawati and Ubud.
Is it safe to swim at Gianyar's beaches?
Generally not. The black-sand beaches on the Gianyar coast have strong currents and get deep quickly. Enjoy the sunrise, surf at spots that match your ability, or just enjoy the food.
Do I need a sarong to enter temples in Gianyar?
Yes. Temples such as Tirta Empul and Goa Gajah require a sarong (kamen) and sash. You can usually borrow one at the entrance.
