Riding two-up through Ubud's rice fields, stopping at a roadside coffee stall, then chasing the sunset on the cliffs of Uluwatu: for many couples, this is the most enjoyable way to experience Bali. But riding together has its own challenges, from a scooter that's too small for two adults to a passenger who's sore after an hour. This guide helps you decide whether one scooter is enough or you need two, choose the right model, and plan riding days that stay romantic without the drama.

One scooter or two?

This decision affects cost, comfort and safety throughout your holiday. Most couples choose one scooter because it's cheaper and feels closer. But two scooters sometimes make more sense, especially for long trips or if one of you wants to surf while the other goes to a spa.

The simple rule: if only one of you is used to riding, rent just one scooter. Learning to ride on Bali's busy roads during your holiday is not a good idea. If you're both skilled and staying more than a week, two small scooters often give more freedom for not much more money.

The most comfortable scooters for riding two-up

Two adults plus bags can weigh 130–160 kg. A 110 cc scooter can still carry that on flat roads, but the engine works hard on climbs such as Kintamani, Bedugul or the roads to the Bukit beaches. A short seat also makes the passenger sore quickly.

  • Honda Vario 125 — the best middle ground: enough power for two, economical, a longer seat than the BeAT, and still affordable.
  • Yamaha NMAX — a wide, stepped seat, comfortable passenger footrests, and storage that fits a helmet. A couples' favourite for out-of-town routes.
  • Honda PCX — similar to the NMAX with suspension that feels softer and bigger storage. Great for long trips such as East Bali.
  • Scoopy and BeAT — light and easy to park, fine for riding two-up in town (Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur) over short distances. Avoid them for mountain routes with two.

Passenger rules you must know

  • One passenger only. Law 22/2009 Article 106(9) bans motorcycles without a sidecar from carrying more than one passenger.
  • Two SNI helmets. Rider and passenger must both wear helmets. Ask the rental for two helmets that fit each of you properly, not one good helmet and one makeshift one.
  • Rider's licence. Whoever is riding must carry a SIM C (Indonesian motorcycle licence) or a valid International Driving Permit with a motorcycle category (foreigners), plus the scooter's STNK (registration card).
  • Don't hold your phone while riding. Let the passenger navigate with Google Maps; the rider focuses on the road.

Split the jobs from the start: the rider focuses on the road, the passenger is navigator, parking-money holder and bag keeper. Couples who divide roles like this rarely get lost and rarely argue on the road.

How to ride two-up comfortably and safely

A good passenger makes the scooter more stable. A fidgety passenger who turns suddenly or leans against the scooter in corners can make the rider lose balance, especially at low speed.

  1. The passenger gets on after the rider is seated with both feet on the ground, and gets off first when stopping.
  2. The passenger's feet always stay on the footrests, away from the exhaust. Exhaust burns are the most common injury among tourists; wear long trousers or mind the right side of the scooter.
  3. Hold the rider's waist or the rear grab handle. When the scooter leans into a corner, lean with it, don't fight it.
  4. When braking, the passenger braces with thighs and hands so as not to push the rider forward.
  5. Use simple signals: one tap for 'slow down', two for 'stop'. Voices are hard to hear inside a helmet.
  6. Stop every 45–60 minutes to drink and stretch your legs.

Route ideas for couples

A holiday for two doesn't need a packed schedule. Choose one main destination per day and leave time for unplanned stops.

What to bring as a couple

  • Two two-piece rain suits (not ponchos) kept in the under-seat storage, especially November–March.
  • A small backpack for the passenger and a crossbody bag worn in front for wallet and phone.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a thin mask for dust.
  • A sarong for entering temples; many temples lend them, but bringing your own is easier.
  • A copy or photo of your passport/ID and the scooter's STNK on each of your phones.

Check the scooter together at handover: photograph every scratch, test the brakes, lights and horn, and make sure the passenger footrests fold out. Keep those photos until you return the scooter.

Conclusion

For most couples, one 125–160 cc scooter is the most balanced choice: powerful enough, comfortable for the passenger, and economical. Split the roles on the road, limit riding time, and pick one main destination per day. Ready to book? Frequently asked questions

Can a Honda BeAT handle two people in Bali?

Yes, for short distances on flat roads like Kuta, Seminyak or Sanur. For long climbs to Kintamani, Bedugul or the Bukit beaches, a Vario 125, NMAX or PCX is far more comfortable for two.

Is one scooter or two cheaper for a couple?

One scooter is almost always cheaper: one rental fee, one tank of fuel and one parking fee. Two scooters are usually 30–60% more expensive per day, but give freedom if you're both skilled riders.

Do scooter passengers also have to wear a helmet in Bali?

Yes. Law 22/2009 Article 106(8) requires both rider and passenger to wear SNI helmets. Violations can be punished with up to one month's detention or a fine of up to Rp250,000.

How long should a couple ride in a day?

About 2–3 hours of actual riding per day, with a break every 45–60 minutes. Beyond that, the passenger usually gets sore and loses concentration.

Which scooter is best for a honeymoon in Bali?

An NMAX or PCX if you'll do many out-of-town trips, thanks to the wide seat and comfortable suspension. If you're only exploring one area such as Seminyak or Ubud, a Scoopy or Vario is enough and cheaper.
