In Bali, most travellers ride 110–160 cc scooters. The XMAX 250 is in a different class: its engine is almost twice the size, its seat is roomy for two, and its tank can cover long distances without frequent petrol stops. The price is also almost double. This article helps you judge when an XMAX is really worth it, which routes suit it best, and what to keep in mind when riding it on Bali's roads.

For most holidays, an NMAX or PCX is already very comfortable. Compare the two in NMAX vs PCX. The XMAX comes out ahead when your daily distances are long, you ride with a passenger, and the route has plenty of climbs.

When an XMAX is worth paying more for

  • Long two-up touring. For example Canggu to Lovina via Bedugul, or a Sanur–Amed round trip in a day. The extra power and wide seat reduce fatigue for both rider and passenger.
  • Long climbs with a passenger. The roads to Kintamani, Bedugul and Lempuyang feel relaxed. The engine does not need to be pushed to high revs.
  • Carrying lots of gear. The storage of about 45 litres fits two helmets, or a raincoat, camera and snacks all at once.
  • Fewer petrol stops. The 13-litre tank is enough for a full day's ride on most routes.

When to choose a different bike

  • You are staying in Canggu, Seminyak or Kuta and only moving between cafés and beaches. In narrow, congested lanes, a big scooter is a hassle.
  • You have never ridden a scooter over 150 cc. A weight of about 180 kg is hard to control at walking pace, when turning in lanes, or when parking on a slope.
  • Your budget is tight. The difference between renting an XMAX and an NMAX for a week could pay for a day of car hire with a driver.
  • Your destinations are beaches with sandy parking or steep, narrow descents.

South Bali – Lovina via Bedugulabout 3 hoursLong descent to the north coast
Sanur – Candidasa – Amedabout 2.5 hoursEast coast road, crosswinds

Route details are in the Ubud–Kintamani scooter route, the Bedugul–Munduk scooter route and the East Bali–Lempuyang scooter route. If you are staying in the north, see also scooter rental in Lovina.

Bali Mandara Toll Road

The toll road over the sea linking Nusa Dua, Ngurah Rai Airport and Benoa has a dedicated motorcycle lane. The motorcycle toll is around Rp5,000 per gate, paid with an electronic money card, not cash. Make sure your card has enough credit before you reach the gate.

A realistic total cost

Daily rentalRp300–350kWeekly rental is usually cheaper per day
FuelOne full 13-litre tank for a day of touringMany owners use Pertamax (higher-octane fuel). Follow the rental's advice

Parking and tollsA few thousand rupiah per stopCarry small change and an electronic money card

Example: for a 7-day holiday with two days of long touring, many travellers rent an NMAX for the five everyday days and an XMAX only for the two touring days, if the rental can swap bikes. That way you stay comfortable on long routes without paying the XMAX rate every day. Ask about this from the start, as not every rental offers bike swaps.

Because the bike is worth more, XMAX bodywork repairs also cost more. Read deposits, insurance & damage before signing the rental agreement.

Tips for riding an XMAX on Bali's roads

  • Smart key. The XMAX uses a keyless system. Keep the fob in a secure pocket, not on the seat or in the storage compartment, and ask about the emergency procedure if the fob battery dies.
  • Centre stand. Use the centre stand on level ground. On slopes or sand, a bike this heavy tips over easily.
  • U-turns. Make them on wide roads. In narrow lanes, getting off and pushing is safer than forcing a turn.
  • Long descents. On the descents from Kintamani or Bedugul, slow down before bends and alternate the front and rear brakes.
  • Bike width. Leave extra space when filtering between cars. The XMAX's mirrors are wider than a regular scooter's.

Test the bike on a quiet road near the rental for 5–10 minutes: stop, ride slowly, make a tight turn, then park. If it feels heavy or your feet struggle to reach the ground, switch to an NMAX or PCX before you leave. Swapping bikes at the start is far cheaper than repairing scratched bodywork.

How to book

There are fewer XMAX units than 110–160 cc scooters, so book a few days ahead. Check availability and estimated prices on the XMAX rental in Bali page, or compare with other models on the scooter rental in Bali page. Mention your touring route when you book via WhatsApp.
