Tabanan is Bali's rice bowl: the Jatiluwih rice terraces, the Tanah Lot temple on its sea rock, the lake and botanic garden at Bedugul, and quiet black-sand beaches on the west coast. The sights are far apart and public transport barely exists, so a scooter is the freest way to explore. This guide explains where to rent, which scooter suits each type of terrain, how long the trips take, and what to watch out for on the road.

Where to rent a scooter for Tabanan

Tabanan Regency borders Canggu (Badung) to the east. There are scooter rentals in Tabanan town, but the choice is smaller than in South Bali and few are used to serving tourists. That is why most people use one of these options:

  • Rent in Canggu, Pererenan or Seminyak. The widest choice and competitive prices. From Canggu, Tanah Lot is only about 30–40 minutes away. See scooter rental in Canggu or scooter rental in Seminyak.
  • Ask for delivery to a villa in Kedungu, Nyanyi or Beraban. These areas are in Tabanan but still within reach of Canggu rentals. There is usually a delivery fee based on distance, so ask when you book via WhatsApp.
  • Staying in Jatiluwih or Bedugul? Bring a scooter from where you stayed before. Finding a rental directly in the highlands is harder.

The right scooter for each type of terrain in Tabanan

Tabanan's terrain is very varied: flat coast, village roads between rice fields, and long, foggy climbs up to Bedugul. Choose your scooter for the hardest route you plan to ride, not the easiest.

RouteTerrainSuggested scooter
Canggu – Tanah Lot – KedunguFlat, narrow village roadsBeAT / Scoopy
Tabanan town – JatiluwihModerate climbs, winding, narrow roadsVario 125 / NMAX
To Bedugul via BaturitiLong climbs, fog, about 1,200 mNMAX / PCX (two riders), Vario (solo)
Soka & Balian beaches (west)National road, heavy truck trafficVario / NMAX
Pura Luhur BatukaruSteep, narrow village roadVario / NMAX

Compare each scooter's character in the best scooters for touring Bali. For the Bedugul climb with two people, a 150–160 cc scooter such as the NMAX is far more relaxed than a 110 cc bike.

Tabanan sights and travel times from Canggu

The times below are estimates on an automatic scooter in normal traffic. Add 20–30% if you set off in the afternoon or at the weekend.

DestinationApprox. time from CangguNotes

Kedungu Beachabout 30 minutesBlack sand, beginner–intermediate surf spot

Pura Luhur Batukaruabout 1.5 hoursOn the slopes of Mount Batukaru, cool air
Ulun Danu Beratan Temple (Bedugul)about 1.5–2 hoursOften foggy and rainy after midday
Balian Beachabout 1.5 hoursVia the Denpasar–Gilimanuk road

Tanah Lot

Tanah Lot gets busy from late afternoon as visitors wait for sunset. Arrive before 4 pm to get parking close by. Scooter parking is officially managed and paid. From the car park you walk past rows of stalls to the shore. At low tide you can get close to the rock the temple stands on. Listen to staff announcements, as the waves can rise quickly.

Jatiluwih

The Jatiluwih rice terraces are part of the subak (traditional irrigation) cultural landscape recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2012. The roads to and through the area are narrow, winding and two-way, and tour buses use them too. Slow down on blind bends and give a short toot of the horn. Park in the designated area, then explore the terraces on foot along the trekking paths. Never ride a scooter onto the rice field banks.

Bedugul

Bedugul is in the highlands, where the air is much cooler and afternoon temperatures are often below 20°C. Besides Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, there is the Bali Botanic Garden and the fruit market in Candikuning. Fog and rain usually arrive after midday, so set off in the morning. To continue to Munduk and the twin lakes, follow the Bedugul–Munduk scooter route.

A sample day trip from Canggu

  1. 7:30 Leave Canggu towards Mengwi. If you have time, stop for 30 minutes at Taman Ayun.
  2. 9:00 Arrive at Jatiluwih while the terraces are quiet and the light is good for photos. Walk the rice field trails for 1–2 hours.
  3. 11:30 Lunch at a warung overlooking the rice fields.
  4. 13:00 Ride down to Tabanan town and fill up at a petrol station.
  5. 15:30 Arrive at Tanah Lot and look around while waiting for sunset.
  6. 18:30 Ride back to Canggu (about 30–40 minutes), ideally on the roads you used in daylight.

The full route with alternatives and shortcuts is in the Tanah Lot–Jatiluwih scooter route.

What to watch out for on Tabanan's roads

  • The Denpasar–Gilimanuk road. This national road links Bali with Gilimanuk Harbour, so it is busy with interprovincial trucks and buses. Many drivers overtake aggressively. Where possible, use parallel village roads.
  • Highland weather. Rain and fog in Jatiluwih and Bedugul can arrive suddenly. Carry a raincoat and turn your lights on in fog. Read our tips for riding in the rainy season.
  • Few petrol stations up high. Fill up in Tabanan town or Kediri before climbing. Villages usually only have roadside fuel sellers.
  • Temple ceremonies. Village roads may be closed temporarily during ceremonies. Follow the directions of the pecalang (traditional village guards) and have an alternative route ready.
  • Dark roads. Many roads between the rice fields are unlit. Try to be back on a main road before 7 pm.

Brake gradually on the long descent from Bedugul towards Tabanan. Alternate front and rear brakes so they do not overheat. This is safer than holding one brake all the way down.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are there scooter rentals in Tabanan?

There are a few in Tabanan town, but the choice is limited. Most travellers rent in Canggu or Seminyak, or have a scooter delivered to their villa in Kedungu or Beraban for a delivery fee.

How long does it take from Canggu to Jatiluwih by scooter?

About 1.5 hours each way in normal traffic, via Mengwi and Tabanan town or via village roads towards Penebel.

Which scooter can handle the climb to Bedugul?

Solo, a Vario 125 is enough. For two riders, choose a 150–160 cc scooter such as an NMAX or PCX so the long climb to Bedugul feels easy.

When is the best time to ride to Tanah Lot?

Arrive around 3:30–4 pm to get parking and see the sunset. Ride home on well-lit main roads and avoid dark village roads.

Is fuel easy to find in Tabanan?

There are petrol stations in Tabanan town and along the main roads. In Jatiluwih and the upland villages there is usually only roadside fuel, so fill up before you climb.
