Automatic vs Manual Scooter in Bali: Which Should You Rent?
By the SiapPergi Editorial Team · Published 11 October 2026 · 7 min read

Almost every rental scooter in Bali is an automatic: Honda BeAT, Scoopy, Vario, Yamaha NMAX, Honda PCX. But some providers also rent out semi-automatic 'bebek' bikes (gears without a hand clutch) and clutch bikes such as the Kawasaki KLX 150 trail bike. Common questions: can an automatic handle the climb to Kintamani, is a manual more fuel-efficient, and do you need a different licence? This article compares the three transmission types on real Bali roads, then gives recommendations based on your experience and route plans.
The three transmission types you may come across
- Automatic (scooter, CVT): just twist the throttle and brake. No gear lever. Examples: Honda BeAT, Scoopy, Vario, Yamaha NMAX, Honda PCX, XMAX.
- Semi-automatic ('bebek' or underbone): a gear pedal at your left foot but no clutch lever on the handlebar. Common examples in Indonesia: Honda Supra X 125, Honda Revo, Yamaha Jupiter Z. Increasingly rare in tourist rental fleets.
- Manual clutch: a clutch lever on the left handlebar and a foot gear pedal. The most commonly rented example in Bali is the Kawasaki KLX 150 trail bike; some providers also have sport bikes or other trail bikes.
Head-to-head for Bali conditions
| Aspect | Automatic | Semi-automatic | Manual clutch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ease for beginners | Easiest | Medium: you need to be used to changing gear | Hardest: clutch and throttle coordination |
| Traffic in Canggu, Kuta, Seminyak | Very comfortable | OK; lots of gear changes | Tiring for your left hand |
| Long climbs (Kintamani, Bedugul) | Fine from 125 cc up; 110 cc struggles with a passenger | Good in low gear | Very good, power is easy to control |
| Long descents | Weak engine braking; brakes work harder | Good engine braking in low gear | Strongest engine braking |
| Broken, rocky roads, light off-road | Less suitable (small wheels) | OK | Best (especially trail bikes) |
| Storage | Under-seat storage, flat footboard | Small storage | Almost none |
| Rental availability | Most common, every area | Limited | Limited, mostly trail bikes |
| Estimated market price/day | BeAT approx. Rp60–80k up to PCX approx. Rp130–160k | Roughly the same as a BeAT | KLX 150 approx. Rp180–250k |
Prices in the table are estimated market prices and can change with the season, area and rental length. Weekly and monthly rentals are usually cheaper per day.
| Model | Price/day | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Honda BeAT | from Rp60.000 | Fuel-efficient & light, great around town |
| Honda Scoopy | from Rp65.000to Rp70.000 | Retro style, roomy storage |
| Honda Vario 125 | from Rp65.000to Rp75.000 | Comfortable for mid distances |
| Yamaha NMAX 155 | from Rp120.000 | Big & stable, comfy with a passenger |
| Honda PCX 160 | from Rp130.000 | Premium, spacious seat |
| Kawasaki KLX 150 | from Rp180.000 | Trail bike for village roads & hills |
| Yamaha XMAX 250 | from Rp300.000 | Maxi-scooter for touring |
Estimated market price per day. The final price depends on the rental, the bike's year, rental length & season, and is confirmed before you pay.
Myth: automatics can't handle Bali's hills
Modern automatics can climb to Kintamani, Bedugul or Lempuyang, as long as the engine size and load are right. Problems usually happen with a 110 cc bike carrying two adults and bags up a steep hill. The engine keeps going, but slowly, and the CVT belt works hard. The solution isn't switching to a manual but choosing a 125–160 cc automatic such as the Vario, NMAX or PCX for mountain routes.
The automatic's weak point is actually going downhill. With no low gear to hold the speed, riders tend to hold the brakes constantly until the pads overheat and braking power fades. The technique is to reduce speed before the descent, alternate front and rear brakes, and stop for a while if the brakes start to fade. Full explanation in tips for climbs & descents in Bali.
Are manual bikes more fuel-efficient?
In general, semi-automatic and clutch bikes of the same size do tend to be slightly more economical than automatics, because there's no power loss in a CVT. But for a holiday the difference is small. With Pertalite petrol at around Rp10,000 per litre, a 100 km trip on a 110–125 cc automatic usually uses only about 2–2.5 litres. A few thousand rupiah a day is not worth giving up the comfort of an automatic in traffic. Fuel costs are detailed in fuel, petrol stations & parking in Bali.
Licences: automatic and manual are the same
In Indonesia, motorcycle licence categories are based on engine size, not transmission type. Under Police Regulation No. 5 of 2021, SIM C covers motorcycles up to 250 cc, SIM C I covers above 250 up to 500 cc, and SIM C II covers above 500 cc. So a SIM C obtained by taking the test on an automatic is also valid for a KLX 150 or a semi-automatic. Foreign visitors need their home-country licence plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) that includes the motorcycle category. Details in Bali scooter rental requirements.
Never used a clutch? Don't learn on Bali's roads. Traffic jams, hill starts in the middle of villages and busy junctions are the easiest places to stall or have the bike lurch forward. If you want to try a trail bike, practise somewhere quiet first until you can stop and pull away on a hill with confidence.
Recommendations for your profile
| Profile | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner or rarely ride | 110 cc automatic (BeAT, Scoopy) | Light, low, easy to control |
| Exploring South Bali and Ubud | 110–125 cc automatic | Nimble in traffic, economical, easy to park |
| Two-up to Kintamani, Bedugul, Lempuyang | 155–160 cc automatic (NMAX, PCX) | Better power and brakes, roomy seat |
| Hidden beaches, rocky roads, Nusa Penida | Manual trail bike (KLX 150) if experienced | Long-travel suspension, knobby tyres, strong engine braking |
| Used to semi-automatics back home | Semi-automatic if available, or a 125 cc automatic | Gear-changing habits help on climbs |
| Staying a month for work | 125 cc automatic | Practical every day, storage, easy to maintain |

How to ask for a manual bike when booking
- Say clearly which type you want: 'motor bebek' (semi-automatic) or 'motor kopling/trail' (clutch/trail bike), because the word 'manual' is sometimes understood differently.
- Ask about the model and year, and the condition of the clutch and chain. A dry or slack chain makes gear changes worse.
- Book early. There are far fewer manual bikes than automatics, especially in peak season.
- At handover, run through all the gears and practise stopping and starting somewhere safe before taking it onto the main road.
- Ask about the usage rules: some providers don't allow trail bikes on heavy off-road tracks or on other islands.
For automatics the process is simpler: choose a model, area and dates, then send a request via WhatsApp on the scooter rental in Bali page. If you're staying in Ubud and plan to ride up to Kintamani, consider a 155–160 cc bike via scooter rental Ubud.
Conclusion
An automatic is the default answer for Bali because the roads are busy, distances are short and fleets are biggest. If your route is hilly and you're riding two-up, go up in engine size rather than changing transmission. A clutch bike, especially a trail bike, only makes sense if you're experienced and actually heading for broken roads or hidden beaches. A semi-automatic is a comfortable middle ground for those used to them, but there are few available.

Frequently asked questions
Is it better to rent an automatic or a manual in Bali?
For most visitors, an automatic. South Bali traffic is heavy and automatics are far easier in jams. A manual clutch bike like the KLX 150 suits experienced riders heading for broken or rocky roads.
Can you rent a manual motorbike in Bali?
Yes, but there are far fewer than automatics. The most common is the Kawasaki KLX 150 trail bike with a manual clutch; semi-automatics without a hand clutch are sometimes available. Book early and state the type clearly.
Is a SIM C obtained on an automatic valid for a manual bike?
Yes. Motorcycle licence categories are based on engine size, not transmission. SIM C covers motorcycles up to 250 cc, whether automatic, semi-automatic or clutch.
Can an automatic scooter make it up to Kintamani or Bedugul?
Yes. For riding two-up, choose a 125–160 cc automatic such as the Vario, NMAX or PCX. What you need to watch is the descent: alternate front and rear brakes and don't hold the brakes constantly.
How much does it cost to rent a manual motorbike in Bali?
A KLX 150 trail bike is estimated at around Rp180,000–250,000 per day at market prices. A semi-automatic, if available, usually costs about the same as a small automatic like the BeAT, around Rp60,000–80,000 per day. The exact price depends on the provider, season and rental length.
