Jembrana is Bali's westernmost regency and the gateway from Java via Gilimanuk Harbour. It's calm, far from the crowds of South Bali, and crossed by the Denpasar–Gilimanuk national road, which is busy with trucks and buses. There are far fewer tourist rentals here than in Kuta or Ubud, so renting a scooter in Jembrana takes a little planning. This guide explains your options, distances and travel times, and the places worth visiting in its five districts.

Getting to know Jembrana and its five districts

Jembrana runs along the south coast of West Bali, between the sea to the south and forested mountains to the north. Part of its north-western area lies within West Bali National Park. A list of villages and customary villages by district is on the Jembrana Regency page.

Scooter rental options for Jembrana

1. Rent in Lovina or Canggu, then ride west

If you're touring Bali and Jembrana is just one stop, rent a scooter in a tourist area and ride west. From North Bali, take scooter rental Lovina and go via Seririt–Pulukan (mountain road) or Pemuteran–Gilimanuk (coast). From the south, use scooter rental Canggu and follow the west-coast road as described in Bali west coast scooter route.

2. Have a scooter delivered to your accommodation in Jembrana

If you're staying several days in Negara, Medewi or Gilimanuk, ask about delivery and pick-up via WhatsApp. Because of the distance, the delivery fee can equal or exceed a day's rental; a weekly rental usually makes more sense.

3. Bring your own motorbike from Java

Travellers from East Java often bring their own motorbike on the Ketapang–Gilimanuk ferry. The crossing takes approx. 1 hour, not counting queues. How to buy tickets and what it costs is explained in bringing your own motorbike to Bali by ferry.

Gilimanuk → Pemuteranapprox. 30 kmapprox. 40 minutes
Lovina → Gilimanuk (north coast)approx. 80 kmapprox. 2 hours

Travel times are estimates under normal conditions. Truck queues on the Tabanan–Negara stretch can add 30–60 minutes, especially before long holidays.

Riding the Denpasar–Gilimanuk road

  • Watch out for big vehicles. Inter-island trucks and buses often overtake at high speed. Stay in the left lane and give them room.
  • Don't ride at night. Many stretches are unlit, especially the forest between Cekik and Gilimanuk. Read riding a scooter at night in Bali.
  • Fill up in Negara. Petrol stations between the small towns are far apart.
  • Carry full documents. Licences, the scooter's STNK (registration) and ID are often checked near the harbour.
  • Choose a capable scooter. For long trips or riding two-up, an NMAX or Vario 125 is more comfortable than a 110 cc scooter.

Places to visit in Jembrana by scooter

  • West Bali National Park — forest, mangroves and habitat of the Bali starling. Entering certain zones requires a permit and a guide from the park authority.
  • Rambut Siwi Temple (Mendoyo) — a clifftop sea temple, easy to reach from the national road. Wear a sarong and sash; see temple etiquette when visiting by scooter.
  • Medewi Beach (Pekutatan) — a long left-hand wave loved by surfers; simple warungs and guesthouses by the beach.
  • Bunut Bolong (Pekutatan) — a huge tree whose roots form a tunnel over the road to Pupuan.
  • Palasari Dam (Melaya) — a reservoir at the foot of the hills, near Palasari village, famous for its church.
  • Makepung — Jembrana's traditional buffalo races. The schedule is seasonal; ask your accommodation or the local tourism office.

Conclusion

Jembrana suits travellers looking for a quieter Bali: surf beaches, sea temples and national-park forest. Because local rentals are limited, decide early: rent in Lovina or Canggu and ride west, arrange a weekly delivery, or bring your own motorbike from Java. The list of every district in Bali and its nearest rental area is in scooter rental across Bali; prices and booking are on Bali scooter rental.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are there scooter rentals in Gilimanuk and Negara?

There are a few local rentals and private individuals renting out bikes, but far fewer options than in South Bali. Ask your accommodation, or plan to rent from Lovina/Canggu with delivery and pick-up.

How long does it take to ride from Denpasar to Gilimanuk?

About 3.5–4 hours for approx. 130 km under normal conditions, longer if the Tabanan–Negara stretch is congested.

Is it safe to ride the Denpasar–Gilimanuk road?

Yes, if you're careful: ride in daylight, stay in the left lane, don't overtake on bends, and rest every hour. The road is busy with trucks and buses.

Can I take a rental scooter from Bali across to Java via Gilimanuk?

Only with written permission from the owner. Most rentals forbid it. Read the guide to taking a rental scooter between islands before you plan.
