Rental Scooter Lost or Stolen in Bali: Steps & Compensation
By the SiapPergi Editorial Team · Published 11 October 2026 · 5 min read

Rental scooter theft in Bali isn't common, but the consequences are serious: you could be asked to pay the bike's value, which can be dozens of times the rental price. Panic makes many people take the wrong steps, such as reporting late or losing the parking ticket. This article explains what to do if your rental scooter goes missing, how compensation is usually calculated, and simple habits that almost eliminate the risk.
Step 1: make sure the bike is really gone
Before concluding it's been stolen, check the more likely explanations. At beaches, markets and attractions, parking attendants often move bikes to make room. Rental scooters also look alike: there are thousands of black BeATs and white Scoopys.
- Match the number plate on the STNK or your handover photos against the bikes around you.
- Ask the parking attendant and show your parking ticket.
- Check the parking rows nearby, within a 50–100 metre radius.
- Think back: did you park at a different entrance? Many beaches and malls have more than one parking area.
- Ask the rental: occasionally a bike is taken for maintenance or because of a schedule mix-up.
Step 2: contact the rental immediately
Tell the rental as soon as possible, sending the last location, the time you parked, and a photo of the ticket. The rental knows the bike's features, sometimes fits a GPS tracker, and is usually experienced with police reports. Reporting quickly also shows good faith, which affects how compensation is settled.
Step 3: report to the police
- Go to the Polsek (sub-district police station) covering the place where it happened. The rental or your accommodation can help you find the nearest one.
- Bring ID (KTP or passport), the STNK if you have it, the bike key, the parking ticket, and the rental agreement or chat with the rental.
- Explain the sequence of events: when and where you parked, when you noticed the bike was missing, and what you've done since.
- Ask for a police report receipt (surat tanda penerimaan laporan). Keep the original and give a copy to the rental.
- In an emergency or dangerous situation, call 110 (police) or 112 (emergency number).
Foreign tourists who struggle with Indonesian can ask accommodation or rental staff to help translate. The police report is also needed if you want to claim on travel insurance for belongings lost with the bike.
Never pay a "ransom" to anyone claiming they can return the bike. Pass any such information on to the police and the rental.
How is compensation usually calculated?
Compensation terms depend on the rental agreement. Most scooter rentals in Bali don't include theft insurance for the renter, so the renter may be asked to pay the bike's value. Several factors usually determine the final amount:
| Factor | Effect on compensation |
|---|---|
| Bike's market value (model, year, condition) | The basis of the calculation; premium bikes cost far more |
| Owner's vehicle insurance | If the bike is insured, the renter may only cover the excess (own risk) and related costs; depends on the rental |
| You still have the bike key | Shows the bike was locked; strengthens your position |
| Official parking ticket | Proof you parked in a reasonable place |
| STNK not left on the bike | A bike without its STNK is harder for thieves to sell; shows you were careful |
| Prompt police report | Required for almost every settlement and claim |
As a rough guide, a used 110–125 cc automatic can be worth over ten million rupiah on the market, while an NMAX, PCX or XMAX can be worth tens of millions. That's why you should ask about the loss rules before renting, especially for premium bikes. Ask: "Is this bike insured? If it's lost, what's the most I'd have to pay?" A written answer protects both sides.
How responsibility is split for other incidents (scratches, accidents, tyres) is covered in deposits, insurance & damage on Bali scooter rentals.
If only the key or STNK is lost
- Lost key: don't leave the bike unattended for too long. Contact the rental; they usually have a spare key and can bring it. The cost of a duplicate key is generally the renter's.
- Lost STNK: report it to the rental and ask for guidance. A replacement STNK is arranged at the Samsat (vehicle registration office) with the owner's documents, so it needs the rental's cooperation and usually a police loss report. The cost and time involved can be charged to the renter.
- Lost helmet: usually replaced at the helmet's price. Lock helmets on the seat or take them into restaurants.
How to prevent your rental scooter being stolen
- Park in official ticketed areas with an attendant, especially at beaches, night markets and attractions.
- Lock the steering every time you park, even for five minutes.
- Close the magnetic keyhole cover if the bike has one (common on newer Hondas and Yamahas).
- Use a disc lock or extra padlock if the rental provides one, especially for parking overnight.
- Keep the STNK with you; don't leave it under the seat.
- At your accommodation, park inside the gate or in a guarded area. Ask reception where the safest parking is.
- Never leave the key in the ignition, including when paying at the petrol station or popping into a minimart.
- Choose a bike with a smart key if available, as on some Vario 160, PCX and NMAX units; still lock the steering.

Choose a rental with clear rules
A good rental explains the loss rules before you pay, hands over the original STNK, and often provides an extra lock. Other signs are in how to find a trustworthy Bali scooter rental. When booking a scooter rental in Bali via WhatsApp, ask directly about insurance and your liability if the bike is lost.

Frequently asked questions
What should I do first if my rental scooter is missing?
Make sure it hasn't just been moved by a parking attendant, then contact the rental and report to the nearest Polsek to get a police report receipt.
Does the renter have to pay for a stolen rental scooter?
Usually yes, in part or in full, according to the rental agreement. The amount depends on the bike's value, whether the owner has insurance, and evidence such as the key, parking ticket and police report.
Where do I report a stolen scooter in Bali?
To the Polsek covering the place where it happened. In an emergency, call 110 (police) or 112.
Why shouldn't I leave the STNK on the bike?
A bike stolen together with its STNK is easier to resell, and leaving the STNK can be considered negligence when compensation is calculated.
Does scooter rental in Bali include theft insurance?
Usually not for the renter. Some bikes are insured by their owners; before renting, ask what your maximum liability is if the bike is lost.
