Munduk and Bedugul Self-Drive Itinerary: A Practical Guide
By the siappergi.com team · Published · 4 min read · Baca dalam Bahasa Indonesia
A munduk and bedugul self drive itinerary is one of the most rewarding day or two-day trips in Bali's central highlands, with lakes, waterfalls and cool mountain air. This guide gives you a realistic route, timings and checklists so you can plan it on your own.
Why drive Munduk and Bedugul yourself
Bedugul sits around 1,200 metres above sea level, and the road from the south passes through rice terraces, clove and coffee plantations, and the twisting descent toward Munduk and the north coast. A self-drive trip lets you stop at every viewpoint, temple and waterfall at your own pace, which a fixed tour rarely allows.
The trade-off is that the roads are steep, narrow in places and can be slippery after rain. Good preparation matters more here than on the flat coastal roads.
Choosing your vehicle
For most travellers a scooter is the easiest choice: it parks anywhere, handles tight bends well and is cheap to run. A car makes sense if you carry luggage, travel with children or want shelter during the afternoon rain.
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Scooter (e.g. Honda Vario 125, Yamaha NMAX 155) | Solo or couple, light luggage, flexible stops | Cold and rain on the descent, fatigue on long days |
| Car (e.g. Toyota Avanza, Mitsubishi Xpander) | Families, heavy bags, rainy season | Narrow village lanes, parking at waterfalls |
Scooter prices start from Rp70.000 per day and car prices from Rp310.000 per day at SiapPergi, in Indonesian Rupiah at fixed catalogue prices. Minimum rental is 2 days, and you can see current models on the scooter rental and car rental pages.
A two-day route
The route below works well from a base in Ubud or Seminyak, with Bedugul as the first stop and Munduk for the night.
Day 1: South to Bedugul and the lakes
- Leave early, around 07.30. Traffic on the Denpasar-Singaraja road builds up quickly after 09.00.
- Ulun Danu Beratan Temple on Lake Bratan is the classic first stop. Arrive before the tour buses for quieter photos.
- Bedugul botanical gardens take one to two hours, depending on how much you walk.
- Lunch in Candikuning or Bedugul, then drive north toward Lake Buyan.
- Continue to Munduk by late afternoon. The descent into the village has several viewpoints; keep speed low on the bends.
Day 2: Munduk waterfalls and the north coast
- Morning waterfall walk. Munduk has several falls reached by short trails from the village road. Wear shoes with grip, as paths are wet.
- Coffee or clove plantation visit if you want a guided explanation of local crops.
- Optional drop to Lovina on the north coast, roughly an hour's ride, for an afternoon by the sea.
- Return south the same way or via the Singaraja road, keeping daylight in mind.
Plan to be back at your base before dark. Mountain roads have poor lighting and fog can reduce visibility quickly.
Practical checklist before you set off
- Licence: a motorcycle licence for a scooter, a car licence for a car. Foreign visitors need their home licence plus an International Driving Permit with the correct category. Check current requirements with the official sources in Indonesia, as rules can change.
- Passport or ID: carry a copy and the original, as the rental team may ask to see it.
- Fuel: fill up in Denpasar, Ubud or Bedugul. Petrol stations are fewer in the highlands.
- Rain gear: a raincoat is essential on this route. SiapPergi offers raincoats as an add-on from Rp15.000.
- Cash: small notes for parking, temple donations and waterfall entry fees.
- Offline map: signal drops in parts of Munduk and the descent.
Safety on the mountain roads
- Use a lower gear on descents rather than relying on brakes alone.
- Slow down on wet tarmac and avoid sudden braking on bends.
- Give way to buses and trucks on narrow sections.
- Do not ride tired. Stop for a break every hour or so.
- Wear a helmet at all times; two helmets come free with every SiapPergi scooter.

Frequently asked questions
Is Munduk and Bedugul safe to drive in the rain? It is manageable with care, but the descent becomes slippery and visibility drops. A car is more comfortable than a scooter in heavy rain.
How long does the whole trip take? Allow a full day for Bedugul and Munduk, or two days if you want to stay overnight and visit the north coast.
Can I combine this with a visit to Lovina? Yes, Lovina is about an hour from Munduk, making it a natural extension on the second day.
