How to Get to Kintamani by Scooter | SiapPergi

Getting to Kintamani by scooter is fairly straightforward: follow the main road from Ubud or Bedugul, then climb steadily up the long hill toward the rim of Lake Batur. This guide covers the routes, estimated travel times and practical preparation so your trip is safe and comfortable.

Kintamani sits on the highlands of north-central Bali, around 1,500 metres above sea level, with the famous views of Mount Batur and Lake Batur. The roads are paved and generally manageable on a scooter, but there are some steep climbs and sharp bends to watch for.

Common Routes from South Bali and Ubud

The most popular route is via Ubud. From Ubud you follow the main road north towards Tampaksiring, then continue on to Kintamani. From Kuta, Seminyak or Canggu it is usually more practical to go through Denpasar and the Bangli road, or via Ubud if you want to stop along the way.

Starting pointEstimated travel time*Notes
Ubud45–75 minutesThe most popular route, with several short climbs
Seminyak / Canggu1.5–2.5 hoursVia Denpasar and Bangli, traffic makes a big difference
Kuta / Jimbaran1.5–2.5 hoursChoose whichever road is clearest at the time

*Rough estimates only; these change with traffic and weather. Check a map app for live routing.

Riding Tips for the Kintamani Road

  • Keep a steady speed on hills: on an automatic scooter, hold a steady speed and do not force the throttle on climbs. If the engine feels strained, ease off slightly, then add throttle gently.
  • Brake early for bends and descents: scooters usually have less engine braking than manual bikes, so use the front and rear brakes together and gently.
  • Watch for mist and cold: temperatures in Kintamani can be much cooler than at the coast. Bring a jacket.
  • Mind large vehicles: tourist buses and trucks sometimes take bends using the full width of the road. Leave plenty of space.
  • Fill up before you climb: petrol stations are along the main roads, but they are not always common on the smaller lanes towards the viewpoints. Fill your tank well.

Note: Road conditions, traffic and local rules can change. For official rules on riding and required documents, check with the local traffic police (Satlantas) or the official Bali regional government sources.

Preparation Before You Leave

Before setting off, make sure you have the following:

  1. A motorcycle licence (SIM C) for the scooter. Foreign visitors generally carry their home-country licence together with an International Driving Permit (IDP) with the motorcycle category. Requirements can change, so re-check before your trip.
  2. Your passport or ID card for identification.
  3. A properly fitted helmet. Two helmets come free with every SiapPergi scooter rental.
  4. A raincoat. Mountain weather can change quickly. Raincoats are available as an add-on.
  5. A phone with offline maps or enough signal, as coverage can weaken at some points.

Best Time to Visit

Mornings, roughly before 09:00, are usually the clearest, with the best views of Mount Batur. From midday to late afternoon, mist rolls in more often. Avoid riding in heavy rain, as the roads become slippery and visibility drops.
