Bali Rain & Flooding Roads: Safe Riding Tips | SiapPergi

Bali rain and flooding roads can catch even experienced riders out, especially in the wet season from roughly November to March. This guide covers how to plan, ride and react when water covers the road, with practical steps you can use straight away.

Why roads flood in Bali

Bali's wet season brings short, heavy downpours that can drain slowly from low-lying streets, rice-field edges and roadside ditches. Many roads in Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu and the southern areas can hold standing water for an hour or more after a storm, and runoff can make a dry-looking road slippery with mud and debris.

Rain also reduces visibility, shortens braking distances and makes painted road markings and manhole covers hard to see. The most dangerous moment is often just after rain starts, when oil on the surface lifts and the tarmac becomes very slick.

Before you ride: a short checklist

  • Check the forecast and leave earlier if heavy rain is expected; avoid night rides on unlit flooded routes.
  • Make sure your tyres have tread and are inflated correctly, and that your brakes and lights work.
  • Pack a waterproof layer. SiapPergi offers raincoats as an add-on (1 raincoat Rp15.000, 2 raincoats Rp25.000).
  • Keep your phone in a sealed bag and make sure a phone holder is secure (available as an add-on for Rp15.000).
  • Carry your licence and passport or ID. Foreign visitors need their home licence plus an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category.
  • Save the rental team's number in your phone before you set off.

How to read a flooded road

Do not guess the depth of water. A few centimetres can hide a deep pothole, and moving water is far more powerful than it looks.

  1. Stop and look first. If the water hides the road edge, a kerb or a drain, do not enter.
  2. Check for movement. Fast or flowing water above the wheel hub is a clear signal to turn back.
  3. Watch other vehicles. If cars are braking hard or stalling, the road is not safe.
  4. Choose a detour early rather than trying to ride through the deepest section.

Note: Local road conditions change quickly. Use local advice from your host or the police on current closures, and never ride through water you cannot judge.

Riding technique in the rain

  • Ease off the throttle and brake gently; sudden braking on wet paint or metal can cause a skid.
  • Keep a wider gap to the vehicle ahead and slow down before corners.
  • Avoid painted lines, manhole covers and metal grates, which are very slippery when wet.
  • If the bike starts to slide, keep the handlebars straight and stay relaxed rather than gripping hard.
  • If the engine stalls in water, do not try to restart it through deep water. Walk the bike to higher ground and call for help.

What to do if you get caught

  1. Pull over somewhere safe and high, such as a covered shop front or a raised verge.
  2. Turn off the engine if water reaches the exhaust or air intake.
  3. Wait for the water to drop rather than pushing through it.
  4. Call the rental team on WhatsApp so they can advise you on a breakdown or a swap, depending on the situation.
