Bali Police Motorbike Papers Check: What Documents Should You Carry?
By the siappergi.com team · Published · 3 min read · Baca dalam Bahasa Indonesia
When you ride a motorbike in Bali, the question travellers ask most often is what documents police will want to see at a police check. The answer is simple, but a few small details are easy to miss. This guide lists the documents worth keeping in your bag at all times, and how to handle them if you are riding a rented scooter.
Essential documents to always carry
In general, motorbike riders in Indonesia are required to carry the following documents when riding on public roads:
- SIM (driving licence) that matches the vehicle. For a motorbike this means a SIM C.
- STNK (vehicle registration certificate), the original, not a photocopy.
- Personal identity, such as a KTP for Indonesian citizens or a passport for foreign visitors.
For foreign visitors, a licence from your home country alone is usually not enough. An International Driving Permit (IDP) with the motorcycle category is typically also required. These rules are set by the police and immigration, so the requirements and exceptions can change. Always check the official source before you travel.
Note: Traffic rules, document requirements and fine amounts can change at any time. The information in this article is general. For certainty, refer to the authorities such as the Indonesian National Police (Korlantas Polri) or your local immigration office.
Checklist before you set off
Use this list every time you ride a motorbike, whether your own or a rental:
- SIM C, or an international permit (IDP) with the motorcycle category.
- The original STNK, still valid.
- KTP or passport, and a photocopy as a backup if needed.
- A helmet to SNI standard, properly fastened.
- Check that the lights, brakes and mirrors work.
What if you rent a motorbike?
If you rent a motorbike, the vehicle documents (STNK and official plates) should already be with the scooter when it is handed over to you. You still need to carry your own SIM and identity document. At SiapPergi, every vehicle has an original STNK and official plates, and each one is checked before rental, including tyres, brakes, lights and oil.
At handover you will show your SIM together with your identity document. SiapPergi does not hold your passport or KTP and does not ask for a deposit. For scooter rentals, two helmets are included in the price. If you want a raincoat, it is available as an add-on from Rp15.000.
When the scooter is delivered to your hotel, villa or Ngurah Rai Airport, simply check that the STNK and plates match the vehicle.
What to keep in mind if police stop you
If you are stopped for a check, stay calm and polite. Show the requested documents clearly. Avoid handing original documents to anyone whose identity and authority you cannot verify, and always ask for proof or an official ticket if there is an offence.
Rules on the ticketing process and fine payment are set by the police. If you are unsure, ask what the official procedure is.
